Pedro

Pedro Martinez will not approach the team about a contract beyond 2008 though he would be willing to discuss the matter if the club approached him with the topic. Martinez knows that any discussion of a new or extended contract probably wouldn't begin until he had pitched well into the season and provided proof that his body is able to withstand the work of a regular pitching rotation. Pedro, on March 6, has the date scheduled for his first appearance which is subject to change pending his shoulder.

Billy Joel's Performance At Shea Stadium

Shea Stadium opened in 1964 and has been the home of the Mets ever since. It was the home of NFL's New York Jets for 20 seasons and the New York Giants in 1975, and has also hosted several significant rock concerts, including 1970's Festival for Peace concert with Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon, Janis Joplin and many others, and the Elton John and Eric Clapton double bill in 1992. Shea Stadium is scheduled to be replaced by Citi Field, which is currently under construction, in 2009.

It was announced that New York's own Billy Joel will headline the final musical performance at Mets stadium in July, 2008. The native New Yorker acknowledged the honor of being chosen for this performance. "I remember when the Beatles played in '65 at Shea; they were my idols and still are," said Joel. "This is something I never dreamed of back in the day." "The Last Play at Shea," as it has been dubbed, will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2008. The show will make Joel the first artist in history to perform at all four of New York City's major sporting venues; Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium, and Madison Square Garden, where Joel sold out a record-breaking 12 consecutive shows in 2006.

Largest Contract In MLB History

The Mets introduced two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana to the New York media on Wednesday. The Mets traded with the Minnesota Twins, followed by a 72-hour negotiating window on a profitable contract extension for Santana. The $137.5 million deal was the largest contract for a pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball. The contract will put Santana in a Mets uniform through 2013, with a vesting player option or club option for 2014. Santana went 93-44 with a 3.22 ERA in 251 career games (175 starts) with the Twins. In 1,308 2/3 innings, he has allowed 1,068 hits, 500 runs (468 earned), with 364 walks and 1,381 strikeouts. He has held opposing batters to a .221 career batting average. He led the AL in strikeouts for the 2004, '05 and '06 seasons before finishing second with 235 last season, when he won 15 games and posted a 3.33 ERA in 33 starts. The opposition swung and missed at 27.6 percent of his pitches in 2007, the highest percentage in the AL. He was also third in strikeouts per nine innings (9.66) and fifth with a 2.95 road ERA last season.
